Dmitri Mendeleev

10 questions ยท Science

Dmitri Mendeleev, born in 1834 in far-off Siberia as the youngest of many children, became Russia's most famous chemist and created one of the most beautiful ordering systems in science: the periodic table of the elements. In his day about 60 chemical elements were known, but no one knew how they were related. Mendeleev wrote the properties of each element on cards and arranged them: legend says the solution came to him in a dream. He lined up the elements by increasing atomic weight and found that their properties repeat regularly, "periodically". So in 1869 his table was born. The stroke of genius: where the patterns did not fit, Mendeleev boldly left gaps and predicted that still-undiscovered elements must sit there, along with their properties. When gallium and germanium were found shortly afterwards and matched his predictions exactly, the scientific world was convinced. His system is still the foundation of chemistry today and hangs in every classroom. In his honour, element 101 is named mendelevium. He died in 1907 without ever receiving the Nobel Prize: he missed it only narrowly.

periodic table

The ordering of all chemical elements.

๐Ÿ’ก Did you know? Mendeleev arranged the chemical elements in a table that still hangs in every chemistry room: the periodic table.

How did Mendeleev originally order the elements?

Show answer

atomic weight

And by recurring properties.

undiscovered elements

Along with their properties, e.g. gallium and germanium.

๐Ÿ’ก Did you know? Mendeleev predicted the properties of undiscovered elements and was astonishingly right.

What did Mendeleev leave in his periodic table where elements were missing?

Show answer

gaps

For the predicted, still-unknown elements.

๐Ÿ’ก Did you know? Where elements were missing, Mendeleev boldly left gaps in his table: later filled exactly as expected.
