In ancient Egyptian belief, the Duat is the realm of the dead and the place the sun god Ra travels through each night to be reborn in the east. The deceased must wander through the Duat, pass dangerous trials and finally face the judgement of the dead: the heart is weighed against the feather of truth. The Duat is thus less a place than a journey through death and rebirth. Numerous spells were meant to help the dead survive the dangers of the nightly journey. The sun god Ra's nightly voyage through the Duat is divided into twelve night hours: each its own gate with guardians, described in the hour-book “Amduat” that pharaohs had painted in their burial chambers. The most dangerous moment: the attack of the chaos serpent Apophis, bent on devouring the solar barque: fended off, of all helpers, by the ambivalent god Seth. For the dead, the Duat was above all a place of judgement: jackal-headed Anubis leads to the scales where the heart is weighed against the feather of Maat; ibis-headed Thoth keeps the record, Osiris presides as judge and whoever's heart is heavy with guilt sees it devoured by the “eater of the dead” Ammit, a hybrid of crocodile, lion and hippopotamus. The guidebook was the Book of the Dead, with spells and maps that the wealthy had placed in their tombs.
