Ebola

11 questions ยท Health & Medicine

Hardly any disease strikes as much fear as Ebola. Ebola fever is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause severe internal and external bleeding and, untreated, kills a large share of those infected. It is caused by the Ebola virus, which first appeared in 1976 near the Ebola river in today's Congo and was named after it. Fruit bats are considered the natural reservoir; from them the pathogen jumps to other animals and to humans. Ebola is not spread through the air but only by direct contact with the body fluids of the sick: blood, vomit, sweat. For that very reason, carers and relatives who tended the sick or buried the dead in Africa often became infected. The worst outbreak so far raged from 2014 to 2016 in West Africa and claimed over 11,000 lives; the world saw how quickly a local epidemic can become an international crisis. Since then an effective vaccine and first drugs have been developed that greatly improve the chances of survival. Ebola remains a warning of how important working health systems and fast international help are.
