Edmund Hillary

10 questions · History

Edmund Hillary, born in New Zealand in 1919, was a mountaineer and adventurer and the first person known to have stood on the highest point on Earth. A beekeeper by trade, he devoted himself with passion to mountaineering. On 29 May 1953 Hillary, together with the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, was the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, 8,848 metres high. The news went around the world and made both famous overnight. Hillary always stressed that they had conquered the summit as a team. Hillary devoted much of his life after Everest to the people of Nepal: he built schools and hospitals for the Sherpa communities. He died in 2008 as a national hero of New Zealand. Good to know: Hillary worked as a beekeeper in New Zealand before becoming the world's most famous mountaineer. On 29 May 1953 Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to stand atop Everest. Hillary never revealed which of the two set foot on the summit first: out of respect for Tenzing Norgay. At 8,849 m Everest is the highest mountain on Earth: in the „death zone“ there is barely enough oxygen to survive.
