Eleonore Prochaska is born in Potsdam in 1785, the daughter of a soldier. After her mother's early death she spends part of her childhood in a military orphanage and later gets by as a housemaid: a hard, unremarkable life. But within her burns a desire to fight for the freedom of her country, which lies under Napoleon's rule. The problem: women are not allowed to be soldiers. So Eleonore does something forbidden and dangerous. In 1813, as the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon begin, she disguises herself as a man, takes the name "August Renz" and joins a Prussian volunteer corps. As a soldier she marches and fights alongside the men without her true identity being noticed. In a battle at the Göhrde in northern Germany she is gravely wounded. Only when she is treated is it discovered that the brave soldier "August Renz" is in truth a woman. A few weeks later Eleonore Prochaska dies of her injuries: at the age of just 28. Her courage makes her a legend. As one of the best-known women who fought as soldiers in the Wars of Liberation, she is later revered as the "Potsdam Joan of Arc". Poets celebrate her, and Ludwig van Beethoven writes music in her memory. Eleonore Prochaska stands to this day for the courage of ordinary people who risked everything and for the fact that women had long done more than their times allowed them.
