Elysium

12 questions · Mythology

Elysium, also called the Elysian Fields, is in Greek myth the paradise of the underworld: a sunny, blossoming land where heroes and the righteous lead a happy, carefree existence after death. It is the counterpart to the gloomy realm of shadows and became the model for many later ideas of paradise. The name lives on today in streets and places. Virgil and Dante later drew on this image of paradise for their own visions of the afterlife. Where exactly this paradise lay was a matter of debate: in Homer it lies at the western edge of the world, by the stream of Oceanus, where eternal spring reigns and the mild west wind Zephyr blows; only later was it moved into the underworld. Related is the image of the “Isles of the Blessed”, reached, according to Pindar, by those who have led three blameless lives in a row and ruled, in one tradition, by the dethroned Cronus of all figures, as a mild king. In literature, Elysium echoes to this day: Virgil has Aeneas meet his father there, Dante shaped images of paradise from it, and Schiller's “Ode to Joy” (set to music in Beethoven's Ninth) hails joy as the “daughter of Elysium”. Even the Champs-Élysées in Paris bear the name of the blessed fields.
