Emma Watson
10 questions Β· Society & Everyday
Emma Watson is born in Paris in 1990 and grows up in England. At just nine, she is chosen from thousands of children for a role that changes her life: Hermione Granger in the film adaptations of 'Harry Potter'. Over ten years and eight films she grows up in front of an audience of millions and makes the clever, book-loving Hermione one of the most beloved characters of the series.
Unlike many child stars, Watson does not let fame come at the cost of her education. During filming she completes her schooling and then studies English literature at the renowned Brown University in the US: a degree she finishes with a bachelor's. After 'Harry Potter' she deliberately takes on varied roles, in films such as 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Little Women'.
Watson becomes especially known for her advocacy of gender equality. In 2014 she is made a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women (UN Women) and launches the "HeForShe" campaign, inviting men and boys to actively support equality. Her speech to the United Nations draws worldwide attention.
Watson is seen as a voice that uses fame deliberately for social causes: from women's rights to sustainable fashion to education. She stands for a generation of actresses who use their profile not only on screen but also as activists.
