Elisabeth, known as "Sisi", is born a Bavarian duchess in 1837 and grows up free and close to nature. At just 15 the unexpected happens: the young Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph falls in love with her: though he was meant to marry her older sister. In 1854 the carefree girl becomes Empress of Austria and finds herself caught in the strict constraints of the Viennese court, which she suffers under all her life. Sisi is famous for her beauty and her ankle-length hair, which takes hours to tend. Almost obsessively she battles to keep her slender figure, exercising to excess, starving herself and weighing herself daily: behaviour viewed critically today. She flees the court, undertakes extended travels across Europe and is rarely in Vienna. Politically she leaves an important mark: Sisi loves Hungary and works towards reconciliation with the country. In 1867 she is crowned (together with Franz Joseph) Queen of Hungary; her sympathy helps bring about the settlement of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. Sisi's life is overshadowed by blows of fate, above all the early death of her son Rudolf. In 1898 she is stabbed to death by an assassin in Geneva. After her death she becomes a legend: countless films (above all the "Sissi" trilogy with Romy Schneider) paint a romantic picture that has little in common with the often lonely and restless real woman.
