Equestrian: basics
8 questions · Sports
Equestrian (basics): It is the only Olympic sport in which human and animal compete together. Jumping obstacles is show jumping. In dressage the pair performs set movements in an arena: judged on harmony and precision. The combination is eventing.
The basic gaits are walk, trot and canter. On the horse's back is the saddle. Steering is done through the reins. A wide obstacle is an oxer.
Good to know: In eventing a horse must show all three core skills: it's seen as the supreme equestrian discipline. Knocking down a rail brings penalty points. Top dressage horses look as if they dance to music: the finest aids stay invisible to spectators. Eventing is regarded as the triathlon of equestrian sport. The horse changes gaits on subtle aids from the rider. Dressage, jumping and eventing saddles are cut differently. Through reins, legs and weight the rider gives subtle 'aids'. An 'upright' by contrast is high but narrow. In show jumping a knocked bar means faults; often the pure time in a jump-off decides it.
