Erich Maria Remarque

9 questions · Literature

Erich Maria Remarque (1898 to 1970) wrote in „All Quiet on the Western Front“ (1929) the most famous anti-war novel in world literature. Drawing on his own experience in the First World War, he depicted the horror of the trenches so soberly that it shook millions. The Nazis burned his books and stripped him of citizenship; Remarque emigrated to Switzerland and the USA. Good to know: The novel depicts the First World War through the eyes of the young soldier Paul Bäumer. The 2022 film adaptation won four Oscars. Remarque himself served on the Western Front at 18 and was wounded. In 1933 his work was among the „un-German“ books publicly burned. The Nazis later murdered his sister: partly as revenge on the exiled brother. He wrote further major novels such as „Arch of Triumph“ in exile. He was married to the Hollywood star Paulette Goddard. A German émigré waits for war (and revenge) in the Paris of 1939. The novel was filmed with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. Between a garage, friendship and a fatally ill love, the interwar years fall apart.
