Ernest Shackleton

10 questions · History

Ernest Shackleton, born in Ireland in 1874, was a British Antarctic explorer: famous less for a goal achieved than for one of the greatest survival stories in history. In 1914 he set off to cross Antarctica. But his ship, the "Endurance", was trapped by pack ice and finally crushed. For months the crew held out on ice floes and a barren island. Shackleton, with a few men in an open lifeboat, dared a 1,300-kilometre voyage across the stormiest ocean in the world to fetch help and returned. The incredible thing: despite all the hardships, every single member of the expedition survived. Shackleton is regarded to this day as a symbol of leadership in crisis. He died in 1922. Good to know: Shackleton was born in Ireland and went to sea at just 16. Shackleton set out for Antarctica three times: yet never reached the South Pole itself. His ship Endurance was crushed by pack ice and sank; the crew was stranded on the ice. After nearly two years in the ice, Shackleton brought all 27 men home alive, without a single death.
