Surprisingly little is known about Euclid's life (not even exactly when he was born. What is certain): around 300 BC he worked at the famous Musaeum of Alexandria, the greatest centre of learning in the ancient world. And he wrote the most successful textbook in history: the "Elements". In this work Euclid gathered the entire mathematical knowledge of his time: above all geometry. What was revolutionary was the method: he begins with a few self-evident basic assumptions, the axioms, and derives from them, step by step and strictly logically, hundreds of further theorems. This axiomatic approach still shapes mathematical thinking today, and the familiar school geometry is named "Euclidean geometry" after him. The "Elements" were used as the standard work for over two thousand years: scarcely any book but the Bible went through more editions. In it Euclid proved, among other things, that there are infinitely many prime numbers, with a proof so strikingly elegant that it is still taught today. According to one anecdote, King Ptolemy asked him whether there was not a shorter road to geometry than the "Elements". Euclid's reply: "There is no royal road to geometry." Knowledge cannot be shortcut.
