February 2026

15 questions · Current events

February 2026 was a month of grand stages and deep ruptures. The Olympic flame burned in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo: the first Winter Games officially co-hosted by two cities, with German dominance in the sliding sports and a proud final tally. In California, the Seattle Seahawks celebrated their second title at Super Bowl LX, while half of Asia went to the polls: Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi scored a landslide, Bangladesh voted on a new constitutional order, and in the Netherlands Rob Jetten was sworn in as the youngest head of government in Dutch history. But the month ended darkly: on 5 February, New START (the last major arms control treaty between the US and Russia) expired, Pakistan declared "open war" on the Taliban, and on 28 February the attacks on Iran and the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei ignited a war that would grip oil markets, the Strait of Hormuz and world politics for months. In between: the end of drug lord El Mencho in Mexico and a historic election victory in Costa Rica. A month like a burning glass: concentrating everything that would shape the rest of the year.
