Federico Fellini
10 questions · Film & Cinema
Federico Fellini, born in Italy in 1920, was one of the most imaginative directors in film history. His very name became an adjective: "Felliniesque" describes visually powerful, dreamlike, exuberant, often bizarre scenes.
Fellini began in the style of Italian neorealism but soon developed a distinctive, playful signature between dream and reality. His film "La Dolce Vita" (The Sweet Life) about fashionable Rome shaped an attitude to life and even gave the world the word "paparazzi". His masterpiece "8½" is a playful self-portrait of a director in a creative crisis.
Fellini received numerous awards and an honorary Oscar for his life's work. He died in 1993.
Good to know: Fellini won four Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film: more than any other director in the category; only Vittorio De Sica also reached four, two of them as earlier honorary awards. „La Dolce Vita“ („the sweet life“) became the symbol of a glamorous, decadent mood in 1960s Rome. The puzzling title „8½“ simply counted Fellini's films to date; it was (almost) his eight-and-a-halfth. „Felliniesque“ stands for dreamlike, exuberant, circus-like imagery full of bizarre figures.
