Fencing: basics
8 questions · Sports
Fencing (basics): Foil and épée are thrusting weapons, the sabre is a cutting and thrusting weapon: each with its own rules. Fencing takes place on the piste. Hits are registered electrically; a coloured light shows who has hit. The forward attack is the lunge.
Defending with the blade is the parry. The counter after a parry is the riposte. Before the bout you give the fencer's salute. In épée the whole body is target; in foil only the torso, in sabre everything above the waist.
Good to know: The three weapons differ in target area and rules: foil and sabre have „right of way“, the épée does not. The strip is about 14 metres long and only 1.5 to 2 metres wide. A wire in the jacket and an electric scoring box make even lightning-fast hits visible. In the lunge you drive forward in one long step: the classic attacking move. A successful parry is often followed by the 'riposte': the counterattack. Parry and riposte are the heart of classical fencing. No bout may start without the salute to opponent and referee.
