Fencing: competition & history

8 questions · Sports

Fencing (competition & history): Fencing has been Olympic since 1896. The world body is the FIE. The commands are traditionally in French. Among the best are Italy and France. In direct elimination the winner is the first to 15 hits (or leading after three periods). That is the team event. The sport developed from the duel. Especially successful in sabre is Hungary. Good to know: Fencing has been on the Olympic programme continuously since the first modern Games in 1896. The FIE was founded in Paris in 1913. The FIE uses French as its official language: hence 'en garde' and 'allez'. Hungary (sabre) and Russia are also historically among the elite. In the knockout stage bouts go to 15 hits; in the pools five are enough. In the team event pairs fence in 'relays' up to a total number of hits. The sport grew out of historical fencing with real weapons and duelling. Hungary dominated the sabre through much of the 20th century. Fencing is one of the few sports Olympic continuously since the very first modern Games in 1896.
