Fencing: weapons & terms

8 questions · Sports

Fencing (weapons & terms): That weapon is the foil. That weapon is the sabre. The stance is 'en garde' (on guard). Fencing lives on footwork: controlling distance matters more than raw arm strength. With 'right of way' the point goes to whoever started the attack first; in épée the faster hit counts. The cup over the hand is the guard (bell guard). The protective kit is the fencing gear. The referee starts with 'Allez'. Good to know: The foil was originally the practice weapon: hence the smallest target area. The sabre is the fastest weapon: you may also score with the edge of the blade. 'En garde' is also the first command before every bout. Fencers cover surprising distances in a bout: lightning-fast advances and retreats demand huge leg strength. „Right of way“ decides: whoever attacks correctly first gets the point on a simultaneous hit: it doesn't apply to the épée. The guard protects the weapon hand from hits. The wire-mesh mask withstands high-force thrusts. The commands are traditionally French: 'En garde: prêts?: Allez!'
