Ferdinand Magellan, born around 1480 in Portugal, led the first expedition to sail around the Earth: providing practical proof that the world is a sphere and all the seas are connected. In the service of the Spanish crown he set off westward in 1519 with five ships. He discovered the strait at the southern tip of South America later named after him and was the first to cross from there the vast ocean he called the "Pacific" (the peaceful one). Magellan himself did not reach the goal: he was killed in the Philippines in 1521. His captain Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the circumnavigation. Of the whole fleet only a single ship returned to Spain. Good to know: Magellan was Portuguese but sailed for the Spanish king after Portugal rejected his plans. Magellan's fleet achieved the first circumnavigation of the globe: of five ships only one returned. The stormy passage at South America's southern tip still bears his name: the Strait of Magellan. Magellan did not live to see it completed: he was killed in a skirmish in the Philippines in 1521.
