All about Figure skating: Figure skating takes place on the ice. Key jumps include the Axel, Lutz, loop and toe loop: named after their inventors or take-off. The jump with a forward take-off is the Axel. The spin on the spot is the pirouette (spin). Skaters perform a shorter short programme and the longer free skate to music. A couple with lifts and throws is pair skating. Dance without throws is ice dance. Very successful are Russia, the USA and Japan. Good to know: Skaters use blades with a toothed 'toe pick' at the tip for take-offs. A quad rotates four times in the air: only a handful of athletes worldwide can land one. The Axel is the hardest basic jump because you take off going forward. Top skaters spin several rotations per second in a pirouette. Alongside the free skate there's a shorter program with required elements: together they make the score. Pair skating features spectacular throw jumps and lifts. In ice dance throw jumps are banned: expression is what counts. Russia, the USA, Japan and Canada are among the leading figure-skating nations.
