First World War

20 questions · History

A single shot plunged the world into the abyss: when the Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip shot the Austrian heir Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, a web of alliances drew all of Europe into the First World War within weeks. The Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) faced the Entente of France, Russia and Britain. The German Schlieffen Plan was meant to quickly defeat France but failed at the Marne, and on the Western Front the war froze into a horrific war of position in miles of trenches. In 1916 the battle of attrition at Verdun became a symbol of mass death. New weapons made killing industrial: poison gas burned the lungs, and for the first time tanks rolled across the battlefield. In 1917 unrestricted submarine warfare drew the USA into the conflict, while Russia dropped out after its revolution. On 11 November 1918 the guns finally fell silent in a railway carriage at Compiègne; in Germany the monarchy collapsed at the same moment. The Treaty of Versailles of 1919 burdened Germany with harsh reparations and territorial losses: many see in it a cause of the Second World War. Kaiser, tsar and sultan fell, new states arose from the ruins, and the newly founded League of Nations was to prevent future wars. The first industrial world war had cost around seventeen million lives.
