Flags of North America
15 questions ยท Geography
The flags of North America, Central America and the Caribbean are full of stories: about revolutions, legends and the natural wonders of each country. The flag of the United States of America shows 50 stars for the 50 states and 13 stripes for the founding states, while Canada carries its national symbol, the maple leaf. Mexico's coat of arms depicts an eagle on a cactus with a snake, taken from an old Aztec legend about the founding of the capital.
Further south, the symbols become even more unusual. Guatemala shows the quetzal, which is both the national bird and the name of the currency. The five stars of Honduras recall the former federation of Central American states, and Belize is one of the few countries whose flag depicts people: two woodcutters in the coat of arms. Costa Rica, which has had no army since 1948, is famous for its biodiversity; El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, made headlines in 2021 as the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, and Panama, with its canal between the Atlantic and the Pacific, forms the land bridge to South America.
The Caribbean adds its own colours. Jamaica, home of reggae, has the only national flag in the world with no red, white or blue. Cuba, the largest island in the Caribbean, is known for vintage cars and music, and the Bahamas use a black triangle for the vigour of their people. On Hispaniola two countries share one island: Haiti, which in 1804 became the first state to emerge from a successful slave revolt, and the Dominican Republic, whose flag is the only one to show an open Bible.
