Formula 1: basics
8 questions · Sports
Formula 1 (basics): The best grid spot is pole position. In a pit stop the crew changes all four tyres: often in under three seconds. DRS stood for 'Drag Reduction System' (until 2025). The winner gets 25 points, then 18, 15 … down to 10th place; the season total decides the title.
The race ends with the chequered flag. In danger the safety car leads the field. The Constructors' Championship is the team standings: the points of both of a team's cars count together. The race car is a single-seater (monoposto).
Good to know: Whoever takes pole starts at the very front of the field. A slick crew changes all four tyres in under two seconds. DRS opened the rear wing and cut drag on the straights. For a time, the fastest lap of the race earned a bonus point. The black-and-white chequered flag signals the finish. Overtaking is not allowed behind the safety car. The constructors' title decides the prize money: often more important to teams than the drivers' crown. 'Monoposto' is Italian for 'single-seater'.
