Francis of Assisi, born around 1181 in Assisi, Italy, is one of the most beloved saints in Christian history. As the son of a rich merchant he at first led a carefree life: until he changed radically. Francis gave up all his possessions and chose a life of voluntary poverty in order to live entirely after the example of Jesus. He cared for the poor and the sick and founded the order of the Franciscans, which spread rapidly across Europe. Famous is his deep love of nature: in his "Canticle of the Sun" he praised sun, moon and all creatures as brothers and sisters; he is even said to have preached to the birds. Francis is revered as the patron saint of animals and the environment. He died in 1226 and was soon canonised.
