Franz Beckenbauer, born in Munich in 1945, is regarded as the greatest German footballer and one of the most elegant players of all time. His air of composure and leadership earned him the early nickname "Der Kaiser", the Emperor. Beckenbauer shaped a whole new position: the modern sweeper, or libero. Instead of merely defending, he stepped out of the back line into attack and directed the team with calm oversight. With FC Bayern Munich he won the European Cup three years running and turned the club into a European powerhouse. His unique double: in 1974 he won the World Cup on home soil as captain of the German national team and in 1990 he led the side to the title again as team manager. He is thus among the very few to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a coach. Afterwards Beckenbauer remained a central figure of German football, not least as organiser of the 2006 World Cup at home. He died in early 2024: Germany lost one of its greatest sporting legends. In the end it is less about memorising than about recognising.
