Freddie Mercury from England (born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar) was the charismatic frontman of Queen and one of the greatest showmen in rock history. His enormous vocal range and his gift for conducting whole stadiums made him unforgettable. At the piano he composed world hits like the operatic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. On stage he wielded his half sawn-off microphone stand like a sceptre and drove crowds to sing back: nowhere more spectacularly than at Live Aid in 1985. With the opera singer Montserrat Caballé he recorded the hit ‘Barcelona’. Away from the stage Mercury was known for his lavish parties. In 1991 he died of AIDS-related illness: only a day earlier he had made his condition public, which sharpened awareness of the disease worldwide. Good to know: He was the face and voice of the band.
