Freyja is the Norse goddess of love, beauty and fertility: but also of war, death and magic. Few deities unite so many opposites: she is at once a sensual goddess of love and a mighty commander in war. In a chariot drawn by two great cats she rides across the sky. As a war goddess she receives in her hall Fólkvangr one half of the fallen warriors, while the other goes to Odin in Valhalla. Freyja masters the magic „seiðr,“ a form of prophecy and sorcery she is said to have even taught Odin. Her most precious treasure is the golden necklace Brísingamen. Friday may be named after her (or Frigg). A magical feather cloak gives Freya the power to fly like a bird. For her vanished husband Óðr she weeps tears of gold. Good to know: Freyja combines love and beauty with magical power and a surprising share in war. Her chariot is drawn by two large cats: still a beloved image today. Half of those who fall in battle go not to Valhalla but to Freyja's hall Fólkvangr. This made the goddess of love at the same time one of the North's mightiest war goddesses.
