Freyr is the Norse god of fertility, peace, harvest and sunshine: one of the most beloved gods of farmers. He grants good weather, rich fields and prosperity and belongs, like his sister Freyja, to the race of the Vanir. Freyr owns legendary treasures: the marvellous ship Skíðblaðnir, which can be folded up, and the golden-bristled boar Gullinbursti. But out of love for the giantess Gerd he gave away his magic, self-fighting sword: a loss that becomes his undoing at Ragnarök. For without his sword Freyr will fall to the fire giant Surt in the final battle. Good to know: Freyr brings sun, rain and fertile fields: prosperity and peace depended on his favour. Farmers and newlyweds invoked him for fertility; his symbol was the boar. Freyr's ship Skíðblaðnir always has a fair wind and can be folded up like a cloth. Folded up it fits in a pocket: a marvel made by the skilful dwarves. To win the giantess Gerd, Freyr gave away his self-fighting sword. At Ragnarök he will lack that very sword and fall to the fire giant Surt.
