Fritz Lang

10 questions · Film & Cinema

Fritz Lang, born in Vienna in 1890, was one of the most influential directors in film history and a master of German silent film. His visually powerful, often dark works shape cinema to this day. His most famous work is "Metropolis" (1927), a monumental science-fiction vision of a future city with enormous machines and a human robot: a style-defining classic still today. In his first sound film "M", Lang created a suspenseful thriller about a child murderer. Lang's films belong to German Expressionism with its sharp contrasts of light and shadow. After the Nazis came to power, Lang emigrated and continued to work successfully in Hollywood. He died in 1976. Good to know: Legend has it that Goebbels offered Lang leadership of German cinema: whereupon he fled Germany that very evening. „Metropolis“ (1927) was the most expensive silent film of its time and still shapes the look of science fiction: from „Blade Runner“ to „Star Wars“. In „M“ Peter Lorre played a child murderer: Lang's first sound film used noise and silence masterfully.
