Gaia is the primordial Mother Earth of Greek mythology: one of the very first beings, emerged from Chaos. From her came the sky Uranus, the sea and the mountains, and with Uranus she bore the Titans, Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires. Gaia is thus the ancestress of almost all the gods. Again and again she intervenes in the power struggles of the divine generations: she helped Cronus overthrow Uranus, and later the Olympians against Cronus: yet when Zeus too grew too mighty, she turned against him. As the personified Earth, Gaia is still a symbol of the living planet: the „Gaia hypothesis“ bears her name. As the personified primordial mother Earth, Gaia corresponds to the goddess Terra in Roman mythology. As the last enemy of the gods she bore the monster Typhon. Good to know: Gaia is the personified Earth and primal mother from whom the whole world sprang. The „Gaia hypothesis,“ which sees the Earth as a single living system, is named after her. In the beginning was Chaos; from it emerged, as one of the first beings, Gaia, the earth.
