George III

9 questions · History

George III, born in 1738, reigned over Britain for almost 60 years: one of the longest reigns in history. Under him the crown lost the thirteen American colonies, which declared independence in 1776 and founded the USA. At the same time Britain fought long wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France. In his final years the king fell gravely ill in mind and senses and went down in history as the „mad king“. Good to know: The revolt against him gave rise to the United States. The US Declaration of Independence names him personally as a tyrant. Independence was only finally recognised in 1783. The 4th of July is still the US national holiday. He was the first Hanoverian king whose first language was English. His forebears came from what is now Lower Saxony. He suffered severe mental breakdowns whose cause is still debated. His fate became famous as the play and film „The Madness of King George“. This period is known in Britain as the „Regency“. The Regency era shaped fashion, architecture and the novels of Jane Austen.
