Georges Bizet, born into a musical family in Paris in 1838, was a prodigy of a kind even the Paris Conservatoire rarely saw: admitted at nine, he secretly wrote his Symphony in C at 17: a youthful work of such freshness that after its rediscovery in 1935 it went straight into the repertoire. At 19 Bizet won the coveted Prix de Rome and spent three happy years at the Villa Medici in Rome. Back in Paris, the struggle began: the opera business was sluggish and audiences wanted the familiar. 'The Pearl Fishers' (1863), with its famous friendship duet, earned only polite respect; Bizet kept himself afloat making piano reductions and giving lessons. His enchanting orchestral music for Daudet's play 'L'Arlésienne' showed his mastery of colour. Then he risked everything: 'Carmen' (1875), the story of the freedom-loving cigarette-factory worker who lures the soldier Don José to his ruin. Realistic settings, a morally independent heroine, a murder in full view; the respectable audience of the Opéra-Comique was scandalised, and the critics savaged the piece. Bizet died exactly three months after the premiere, on the night after the 33rd performance, of heart disease, aged only 36: believing he had failed. He could not know that within a few years 'Carmen' would conquer the world and become one of the most performed operas of all. Everyone knows the 'Habanera' and the 'Toreador Song' today: Tchaikovsky predicted as early as 1880 that 'Carmen' would become 'the most popular opera in the world'. Did you know that Nietzsche celebrated 'Carmen' as the antidote to Wagner? He praised its 'African cheerfulness' and confessed to having heard the opera twenty times.
