German Revolution of 1918

20 questions · History

When the First World War was lost in the autumn of 1918, the German Revolution rose up. It began with the Kiel sailors' mutiny: sailors refused to set out for a hopeless final battle. The outrage seized the whole country, and everywhere workers' and soldiers' councils formed on the Russian model. On 9 November 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and fled to the Netherlands; the monarchy was finished. On the same day Philipp Scheidemann of the SPD proclaimed the republic. Two days later, on 11 November, the guns of the world war fell silent. The new government under Friedrich Ebert led Germany into democracy and, for the first time, gave women the vote. But the revolution remained contested: in January 1919 the left-wing Spartacist uprising was crushed, and its leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were murdered. From the turmoil came the Weimar Republic, whose constitution was adopted in Weimar in 1919: Germany's first parliamentary democracy. Good to know: The lost world war triggered it.
