All about Golf basics: One stroke under par is a birdie. One stroke over par is a bogey. Par is the number of strokes a very good player needs for a hole: usually 3, 4 or 5. A full round has 18 holes. The ball sits on a 'tee'; the driver hits the ball the farthest. The area around the hole is the green. A hole in one stroke is a hole-in-one. The sand hazard is a bunker. The person carrying the bag is the caddie. Good to know: Two under par is an 'eagle', three under an 'albatross'. Two over par is a 'double bogey'. Even many amateurs never manage a full round at level par (often 72). An 18-hole round on foot often takes about four hours. The wooden or plastic „tee“ may only be used for the very first shot of a hole. On the green you only putt: the ball is rolled, not struck. Usually only possible on short par-3 holes: a rare stroke of luck. In a bunker you may not touch the sand with your club before the shot. A good caddie knows distances, wind and the lines on the green. Whoever needs the fewest strokes over the round wins (stroke play).
