Griselda Blanco

6 questions · History

Griselda Blanco, born in Colombia in 1943, was one of the few women at the top of the drug trade. In the 1970s and 80s she ran a huge cocaine smuggling operation out of Miami and fuelled the city's bloody „Cocaine Wars“. For her ruthlessness she earned nicknames such as the „Cocaine Godmother“ and the „Black Widow“. In 2012 she was shot from a motorcycle in Medellín: by exactly the method she had made infamous. Good to know: She grew up in bitter poverty in Colombia. Later she moved her business to the USA. From Miami she smuggled tons of cocaine. Her gang triggered brutal turf wars there. She was also called the 'Black Widow' because several of her husbands died violently. Her ruthlessness was notorious even among drug lords. She is seen as a pioneer of cocaine smuggling into Miami. At times she worked with the Medellín Cartel. Two killers on a motorcycle opened fire outside a butcher's shop. She herself had popularized this motorcycle-hit method.
