20 questions · History
The Gulf War (1990 to 1991) began when Iraq under dictator Saddam Hussein invaded and occupied its small, oil-rich neighbour Kuwait in 1990: oil was the real motive. The world community condemned the invasion, and by decision of the United Nations a broad coalition of over thirty states formed under the leadership of the USA. In Operation “Desert Storm” the allies first opened a massive air war in 1991, before a ground offensive liberated Kuwait in only about a hundred hours. Saddam fired Scud missiles at Israel to turn the Arab world against the coalition; Patriot missiles tried to intercept them. As they retreated, the Iraqis set hundreds of oil wells ablaze. As the first “live” war, the conflict was broadcast around the clock on television and made the channel CNN world-famous; for the first time a mass audience saw precision bombs from the weapon's point of view. The US general Norman Schwarzkopf planned the rapid encirclement. In the end Kuwait was liberated, but Saddam Hussein (the coalition deliberately did not march to Baghdad) stayed in power for the time being; only the Iraq War of 2003 finally toppled him. The war fell into the new world order after the Cold War and is often technically called the “Second Gulf War”.
