Guru Nanak, born in 1469 in the Punjab in present-day Pakistan, was the founder of Sikhism: the youngest of the great world religions. He was the first of ten Gurus who shaped the faith after him. Nanak taught belief in a single, formless God and rejected outward rituals and superstition. Especially bold was his message of equality: in a society marked by strict castes, he proclaimed that all people (regardless of origin, religion or gender) are equal before God. A symbol of this is the communal kitchen, maintained to this day, in which all eat together as equals. Nanak undertook long journeys to spread his teaching. He died in 1539 and is revered by millions of Sikhs to this day. Good to know: Guru Nanak founded Sikhism, one of the younger world religions, today with around 25 million followers.
