Gustav Klimt

17 questions · Art

Gustav Klimt is born in 1862 near Vienna, the son of a gold engraver: he will take from there his love of gold and precious ornament. He begins as a successful painter of ceilings and walls for the magnificent buildings of Vienna's Ringstrasse. But soon he breaks with the conservative art establishment and becomes the leader of a movement of renewal. In 1897 Klimt and others found the "Vienna Secession", an association of modern artists who reject the old academicism. Their motto: "To every age its art, to art its freedom." Klimt develops an unmistakable, precious style: he combines flat, ornamental patterns with realistically painted faces and covers his pictures with real gold leaf, so that they glitter like Byzantine mosaics. His most famous work, "The Kiss", shows a pair of lovers who almost merge into one another in a cloak of golden ornament: one of the best-known pictures in the world. Equally iconic is his golden portrait of the Viennese woman Adele Bloch-Bauer, often called the "Golden Adele". Klimt dies in 1918 in Vienna, the same year as several other great Viennese artists. His "Golden Period" is regarded to this day as the high point of Art Nouveau. Did you know that his portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer was returned to the heirs after a years-long legal battle and then sold for a then record price; the eventful story was even made into a film? Klimt’s golden world shines through masterpieces like ‘The Kiss’, the ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I’ (the ‘Golden Adele’) and its counterpart ‘Adele Bloch-Bauer II’, as well as ‘Woman With a Fan’. Beside them stand the layered allegories ‘Judith I’, ‘The Three Ages of Woman’, ‘The Maidens’ and ‘Death and Life’, together with the monumental ‘Beethoven Frieze’ and the ‘Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer’.
