Gymnastics: apparatus & terms
8 questions · Sports
Gymnastics (apparatus & terms): The apparatus with two handles is the pommel horse. Two parallel bars are the parallel bars. The high bar is the horizontal bar. Two uneven bars are the uneven bars.
The final landing is the dismount. A somersault with a long-axis turn is a twist. Bouncing and somersaulting on the bed is trampolining. The discipline with hand apparatus is rhythmic gymnastics.
Good to know: On the pommel horse the legs circle without the body touching the apparatus: hugely demanding. On the parallel bars, strength holds alternate with swinging release moves. On the high bar spectacular release moves lead to risky landings. On the uneven bars gymnasts fly back and forth between the two bars. A 'stuck' dismount with no wobble earns the best marks. Double and triple twists are among the hardest elements. Trampolining has been Olympic since 2000. Rhythmic gymnastics is a women-only discipline at the Olympics. On the parallel bars you support and swing between two rails: strength and balance must come together.
