Gymnastics: basics

8 questions · Sports

Gymnastics (basics): In artistic gymnastics athletes perform routines on several apparatus; judged on difficulty and execution. The men compete on floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. The women compete on vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor. They balance on the balance beam. The apparatus with two rings is the rings. Free routines are done on the floor. You vault over the vault (table). The D-score rates difficulty (open-ended), the E-score rates execution (maximum 10). Good to know: Besides artistic gymnastics there's rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline: also Olympic. The six men's apparatus are floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. The four women's apparatus are vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor. The balance beam is only ten centimetres wide. On the rings gymnasts show strength elements like the 'iron cross'. Women perform the floor to music, men without. The vault, with a long run-up, is the shortest but fastest routine.
