Braiding is the oldest hairdressing technique in the world: finds go back 30,000 years. The simple plait is made by crossing three strands and is the basic form from which all other braids develop. Keep adding new strands as you go and it becomes a French braid, which lies flat against the head and holds without a band at the roots. The fishtail braid, by contrast, crosses only two sections with thin strands, and its fine pattern recalls the bones of a fish, hence the name. Cornrows are rows braided tightly along the scalp; the name comes from their likeness to furrows in a field. Pigtails are two braids worn at the sides, and nobody wears them more famously than Pippi Longstocking, whose plaits stick out thanks to wire braided inside. Two styles in this pack need no braiding at all. Dreadlocks form when hair permanently mats into firm ropes; similar styles are documented from ancient Egypt and India. For Bantu knots, strands are twisted and coiled into small knots. Undo them the next day and you are left with defined curls.
