Hamburg
7 questions · Geography
Hamburg lies in the north of Germany, is both city and federal state, and with around 1.9 million inhabitants is the country's second-largest city. Its heart is the harbour on the Elbe: Germany's largest sea port, through which containers from all over the world travel on inland. That is exactly what Hamburg is famous for: its harbour, the red-brick Speicherstadt warehouse district and the fish market in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Its newest landmark is the Elbphilharmonie, whose wave-shaped glass façade has crowned an old quayside warehouse since 2017. Construction ran years late and cost many times the original estimate: today it is the city's postcard image. Hamburg's coat of arms shows a white castle on a red field, symbol of the fortified trading city.
Officially it is the “Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg”, a title from the days when the Hanseatic League dominated trade in northern Europe.
Did you know that Hamburg has more bridges than Venice, Amsterdam and London combined: over 2,500 of them?
