Handball basics

All about Handball basics: A team has seven players on court: six outfielders and the goalie. A match lasts 60 minutes (two times 30). After three steps you must dribble, pass or shoot; more is a 'travelling' violation. The penalty throw is the seven-metre throw.
The goal area (6-metre zone) is off-limits to outfielders; pivots jump in and release in mid-air. After a foul there is a two-minute suspension. The player on the line is the pivot. The fast counter is the fast break.
Good to know: Unlike football, it is played almost entirely with the hands. In knockout games a tie leads to extra time and, if needed, a penalty shootout. The seven-metre is a clear chance: just shooter against goalie. Only the keeper may enter the six-metre zone: attackers leap from the line and shoot in mid-air over it. After three suspensions a player is disqualified (red card). The pivot disrupts the defence and catches passes in the tightest spaces. A clean fast break often ends in a free shot on goal. Once you know them, you suddenly spot them everywhere again.
