Handball: terms & positions
8 questions · Sports
Handball (terms & positions): A shot in the jump is the jump shot. The shot that bounces is a bounce shot. The centre back is the conductor: organising the attack and setting up team-mates. The outside attackers are the wings.
In the 6-0 all six stand on the line; the 3-2-1 is more aggressive and disrupts earlier. Catching and shooting in the air is the 'Kempa' trick. Stepping out to the shooter is called coming out. Having an extra player is a power play.
Good to know: Jumping gives the shooter height and a better angle on goal. The bounce shot kicks up unpredictably and is hard to save. The centre back is the playmaker: organising the attack like a conductor. Wingers shoot from tight angles: precision is everything. The 6-0 defence packs all six outfield players close to the goal area: a compact, defensive wall. Named after the German handball star Bernhard Kempa. When a defender steps out, a gap opens behind: timing is everything. In a power play teams try to stretch the thinner defence.
