Heimdall is the vigilant watchman of the gods, guarding the only access to the gods' realm Asgard at the rainbow bridge Bifröst. His senses are superhuman: he can hear the grass grow and the wool on sheep, sees for hundreds of miles by day and night, and needs less sleep than a bird. At his side lies the Gjallarhorn, whose sound carries into all the worlds. When the enemies approach, Heimdall will blow it and call all the gods to the final battle: so he heralds Ragnarök. Heimdall and Loki are declared foes: in the final battle the two will kill each other. Legend also makes Heimdall the ancestor of the human social classes.
