Helheim

12 questions · Mythology

In Norse mythology, Helheim is the realm of the dead for all who did not die gloriously in battle but from disease or old age. It is a bleak, cold place deep in the north, ruled by the half-living, half-dead goddess Hel. Unlike Valhalla, it is not a place of honour but of quiet lingering. Its name is related to the English word “hell”: both go back to the same Germanic word for a “hidden place”. A raging river and a barred gate separate it from the world of the living, according to legend. The realm's mistress is Hel, a daughter of Loki: half corpse-like, half alive, so that she is known at first sight. Odin banished her to the depths as a precaution, like her siblings the wolf Fenrir and the Midgard Serpent. Her hall Éljúdnir (“the rain-damp”) is misery made architecture: her plate is called Hunger, her knife Famine. The way there is lined by the river Gjöll with its gold-roofed bridge, the maiden Modgud as toll-keeper, and the blood-stained hound Garm before the Gnipa cave. The most famous journey to Helheim is a rescue mission: after Balder's death his brother Hermod rode Sleipnir down for nine nights and begged Hel to release the beloved god. She set one condition: everything in the world must weep for Balder. Everything wept, except the giantess Thökk, behind whom Loki surely hid. So Balder stayed with Hel until a new world begins after Ragnarök.
