Henning von Tresckow, born into a Prussian military family in Magdeburg in 1901, was the most determined mind of the military conspiracy against Hitler: long before Stauffenberg planted the bomb. After the First World War he left the army, worked in banking and on the stock exchange and travelled the world before returning to the Reichswehr in 1926. At first he saw National Socialism as an opportunity; the Night of the Long Knives and the November pogroms turned him into an opponent. As a General Staff officer of Army Group Centre on the Eastern Front he gathered like-minded officers around him and witnessed the mass murders behind the front. In March 1943, together with his confidant Fabian von Schlabrendorff, he smuggled a bomb disguised as two bottles of Cointreau onto Hitler's plane. The detonator failed, probably because of the cold in the hold. Further attempts came to nothing. Tresckow worked out the coup plans with Stauffenberg and insisted that the assassination be attempted “coûte que coûte”: even if it no longer changed anything militarily, the point was to show the world that the German resistance had dared the decisive blow. When 20 July 1944 failed, Major General von Tresckow walked into no man's land at the front the next morning and killed himself with a hand grenade so that he could not be forced to give away any names.
