9 questions · Economics

Henry Ford, born in 1863, turned the car from a luxury toy into an everyday object. With the „Model T“ he built, from 1908, a simple, robust car that millions could afford. This was made possible by assembly-line production, which he perfected in his factories: it revolutionised all of industry. Ford also paid his workers unusually high wages so that they too could afford his cars. At the same time his role remains controversial to this day because of antisemitic agitation. Good to know: It is still one of the great carmakers today. Ford revolutionised how cars are built. It was simple, robust and affordable. Over 15 million were sold. It cut the time to build a car dramatically. This method changed all of industry. So his own workers could afford a car. The high wages also tied workers to the hard assembly-line work. He wanted to build a car everyone could afford. This fundamentally changed daily life and mobility. He spread anti-Jewish propaganda in a newspaper. This dark side overshadows his industrial legacy.
