Henry V

9 questions · History

Henry V, born in 1386, is the great warrior-king of late-medieval England. In the middle of the Hundred Years’ War he led his army into France in 1415 and won one of history’s most famous victories at Agincourt: his longbowmen shattered a far larger French army of knights in the mud. The Treaty of Troyes even made him heir to the French throne. Shakespeare immortalised him in the play „Henry V“. Good to know: A small, exhausted English army crushed the French knights. The muddy ground doomed the heavily armoured French. Volleys of arrows pierced horses and riders before they could close in. A trained archer could loose more than ten arrows a minute. The struggle for the French throne dragged on for generations. With breaks it lasted from 1337 to 1453. He married the French princess Catherine of Valois. His early death meant he never became King of France. The fiery „St Crispin’s Day“ speech before the battle is world-famous. „We few, we happy few, we band of brothers“ comes from this play.
