Henry VIII

9 questions · History

Henry VIII, born in 1491, is one of history’s most notorious kings: above all for his six wives, two of whom he had executed. When the Pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, he broke with Rome and made himself head of a separate English church. That rupture changed England forever and founded Anglicanism. From the House of Tudor, he shaped an entire era. Good to know: Two he had executed, two he cast off, one died, one outlived him. Rhyme: „divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived“. Henry made himself its supreme head. To this day the British monarch is its head. The Pope refused the annulment: so Henry broke from Rome. He wanted a male heir and married Anne Boleyn. For her Henry had broken with Rome: three years later he had her beheaded. Her daughter became the great Queen Elizabeth I. The Tudors ruled England throughout the 16th century. His father Henry VII founded the dynasty in the Wars of the Roses. She died shortly after the birth of Edward VI.
