12 questions Β· Mythology
Hephaestus is the Greek god of fire, the forge and craft. In his workshop beneath the volcano he forges weapons, jewellery and self-moving marvels for the gods: from the thunderbolt of Zeus to the shield of Achilles. He is the only Olympian who is physically impaired: legend says he was thrown from Olympus and remained lame in the legs ever after. And yet it is the lame one who is the most skilful of all craftsmen and (unusually for a god) one who works. He was married to the fairest goddess, Aphrodite, who betrayed him with Ares. His revenge with an invisible net became the laughing-stock of Olympus. In Roman mythology he corresponds to Vulcan, from whose name the word βvolcanoβ derives. As a son of Hera and the only lame Olympian, Hephaestus, smith of the gods, forges intricate weapons and marvels in his workshop. Good to know: Hephaestus forges thunderbolts for Zeus, weapons for heroes and ingenious marvels of metal. His workshop, legend says, lay inside the volcano Etna on Sicily.
